Ukrainian farmers are showing more and more interest in asparagus cultivation, constantly increasing the cultivated area under this crop.
So, over the past 5 years, the number of areas allocated for cultivation of asparagus in the country has increased 3 times and amounted to 100-120 ha. Ukraine is still far from the EU in growing asparagus, but there is still a positive trend.
The total area under asparagus in the European Union is estimated at 65 thousand ha. The leading consumers of this product are USA, Germany and China. But the Ukrainian market has not been spoiled with asparagus. And the demand for this product is growing only in large cities, where local residents have a higher income.
Asparagus producers sense a rapid increase in demand for asparagus and are investing in increasing the area for their cultivation. In the future, the asparagus market in Ukraine will be characterized by growth over the next 2-3 years, said Peter Grigoryev, director of Agroexpert Trade, a leading company in the production of asparagus in Ukraine.
According to Pyotr Grigoriev, the main sales channels for asparagus in the country are restaurants and markets of megacities such as Kiev, Kherson and the Dnieper. The company plans to sell fresh asparagus in retail chains under its own brand in 2020.
