The Ministry of Agriculture of China has issued certificates for genetically modified crops grown domestically, and this brings the commercialization of grain grown in this way to the world market.
Biosafety certificates will relate to the resistance of corn and soybeans to herbicides, insects. Thus, China is paving the way for the local cultivation of GMO plants.
Such documents will be valid until December 2024, and have already been issued on the basis of corn developed in Beijin, as well as in Zhejiang, and GM soy developed in Shanghai.
The Ministry also announced that public discussions are expected on this issue. The stage of issuing documents is one of the last steps that are necessary for GM products to be issued to farmers as planting stock.
The most popular variety of black corn in China is the Xin Jun He Anthocyanin Black Sweet 1 hybrid. This species is enriched with natural anthocyanins (a pigment of plant origin that forms red, blue and purple colors of flowers, berries and fruits, depending on pH balance)
Earlier it became known that in 2009, China already issued biosafety certificates to its first varieties of GM corn and rice, but never allowed them to enter the international market due to the widespread public opposition to this technology.
Moreover, it has long been allowed to import such products for livestock feeding. Scientists believe that the approved traits of maize resistant to pests and herbicides can increase farm productivity by inhibiting the spread of insects in the country.
- In the near future, the implementation of a joint Russian-Chinese project to grow crops such as soy and corn, with the right of subsequent export, may begin in the territory of the Saratov region.
- Cereal traders are puzzling over recent data showing that US farmers have produced another unprecedented crop, despite the most difficult weather conditions in recent years.
- Kenya is reviewing its 2012 ban on the cultivation of genetically modified corn, as more than 1 million of its citizens need urgent humanitarian food assistance due to prolonged drought.
