Democratic presidential candidate of the United States Bernie Sanders on Sunday May 5 proposed a large-scale plan for investment in agriculture in order to break up large agricultural monopolies and transfer farm subsidies from agricultural monopolies to small family farmers.
His plan includes a number of antitrust proposals, including the liquidation of existing agricultural monopolies and the introduction of a moratorium on future mergers of large agricultural companies. He also proposed banning “vertically integrated” agribusinesses - companies that control several levels of product production and processing.
Sanders also wants to amend patent law to protect small farmers from lawsuits filed by corporate farms, strengthen organic standards and support programs aimed at supporting minority farmers.It includes ideas aimed at developing rural economies and infrastructures, as well as encouraging the agricultural sector to help combat climate change by moving towards more sustainable agricultural practices.
The candidate proposed increasing funding for public education and creating a universal childcare system; his agriculture plan provides for increased funding for rural education and a universal childcare system that would provide rural Americans with day care opportunities.
