This week in Ukraine there is an increase in the cost of onions of the new crop by 7-10%, Info-Shuvar analysts said.
Such a price increase came as a surprise to traders in the country, who were accustomed to the fact that the cost of early onions in June usually falls due to an increase in the supply of winter products.
This year, according to June 13, agricultural producers of the south of Ukraine sell vegetables at a price of 9-11 UAH / kg, which is 0.3-0.36 euro / kg. And in the largest wholesale market of the western region of Ukraine, onions of a new crop are currently sold at a price of 14-16 UAH / kg or 0.46-0.53 euro / kg. In 2018, this product was sold at half the price.
This year, the high cost of onions in the 2nd decade of June is associated with weather conditions in the south of the country. It rains there, which interfere with the full-fledged selection of onions amid growing demand for it.
In this regard, agricultural producers of the Kherson region were able to raise prices for their products this week. If precipitation stops, prices for early onions will drop rapidly, said Tatyana Getman, head of the Analytics department of the Shuvar market.
According to Ukrainian producers, the sale of winter onions will last until mid-July, when a price drop is expected. After that, sales of seedlings start. And later varieties of vegetables will go on sale in early August.
