The Drupacee Committee of the Catalonia Fruit Producers Association, Afrucat, has identified an emergency plan for this sector consisting of a series of short-term and long-term measures. plantations distributed throughout Spain, in the areas of Catalonia, Aragon, Murcia and Extremadura.
The launch of this plan alone will lead to the seizure of about 300 million kg. peaches and nectarines from the European market (25% of what Spain currently produces).
According to Afrucat CEO Manel Simon, this measure may be sufficient to reverse the current negative trend that has been observed since the end of the summer of 2014, when the Russian embargo came into force, leading to losses for the sector.
A modern peach tree is not a creation of nature, but the result of multiple crosses of different types of wild peaches, apricot, cherry plum, plum and almond.
The association estimated the losses the Catalan stone fruit sector could suffer in this campaign at € 90 million, and also said the Spanish ministry should invest € 50 million to support the uprooting plan.
