UK agricultural unions are turning to their counterparts on the continent to seek support to prevent Brexit without a deal.
Presidents of the National Farmers Union (NFU), NFU Scotland, NFU Cymru (Wales) and Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) jointly wrote to their colleagues across Europe, stating that their “unambiguous” position was that Brexit would be “without a deal” economically catastrophic, ”and that it is in the interest of each EU member state to prevent this.
Andrew McCornick, president of NFU Scotland, said, “All EU agricultural unions, our organizations represent thousands of farming families, and it is unbelievable and unacceptable that we are still working without any certainty about future trade relations. This leads to real business consequences right now, and also causes unnecessary stress and great concern for farmers, both at home and throughout the EU. ”McCornick added that British unions will redouble their efforts to give Prime Minister Theresa May a clear picture of the implications for farmers across the continent that Brexit could have.
In conclusion, the president of NFU Scotland called on all European farmers to “continue to transmit this message” to their own governments and authorities “in the most decisive way”.
