UK agricultural unions have written to Treasury Chancellor Philip Hammond with a call to review planned tariffs on imported food in the event Brexit takes place without a deal.
The letter confirms the position of trade unions, which firmly adhere to the point of view on preventing a promiscuous exit of Great Britain from the EU.
Unions warned that leaving the EU without a deal would be “catastrophic” for agriculture, and the government’s proposed tariff policy could open the UK to food that doesn’t meet environmental and welfare standards that British farmers adhere to. Unions also said they respect the government’s decision. on the inadmissibility of the customs border between Northern Ireland and the Republic in the event of withdrawal from the EU without a transaction. However, it is not practical to consider Northern Ireland as a separate customs territory from the UK. The failure of the government to meet obligations with the Republic of Ireland is unacceptable. The union letter states that “it is imperative that the government does not allow the northern Irish border to become a loophole that works only for the good of Irish business, to the detriment of British manufacturers.” “The main point is that duty-free withdrawal from the EU will have disastrous consequences for British agriculture and food production and should be avoided, ”British farmers say.
