A jury in Auckland, United States, on Monday May 13 admitted that a Roundup Ready herbicide had caused cancer in an American couple and ruled that agribusiness giant Monsanto was required to pay $ 2.055 billion to the couple.
The jury concluded that the Roundup provoked non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Alva and Albert Pilliod. The jury decided that Monsanto is obliged to pay a fine of one billion dollars in favor of the victims in addition to the total compensation payments of 55 million dollars.
This jury decision is the third “California financial blow” to Monsanto since August. Following the announcement of the court’s decision, Alberta, 76, said she and her husband had been fighting cancer for the past nine years. One of the couple’s attorneys, Michael Miller, admitted that a $ 2 billion fine penalty would likely be reduced on appeal, but said they were prepared for a lengthy lawsuit.
In the United States, about 13,000 more plaintiffs are awaiting trial in various courts of their allegations against Monsanto, a manufacturer of weed control products and recently owned by the German chemical giant Bayer AG.By the way, Bayer has already stated that it will appeal this court decision.
