British sheep farmers urge politicians to pay "equal attention" to the development of the domestic market while promoting the British lamb.
The sector called on the government to allocate sufficient resources to promote products on the domestic market, as well as on the international market.
This appeal followed the report of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Nutrition and Rural Affairs (EFRA), which suggested that the government had no ambition to promote British food abroad.
While the report welcomed the recognition of the importance of international markets, the sheep sector leaders said the domestic market is also important. The National Sheep Association (NSA) said the UK market still accounts for the lion's share of domestic production.
Phil Stocker, NSA Executive Director, said: “This report is welcome and absolutely necessary to channel sufficient resources to promote our world-class products around the world. However, we believe that this must be done along with an equal recognition of the importance of our own markets here in the UK. ”
Phil Stoker explained that the UK is the backbone of the sheep market, and the government must work to ensure that it is not lost.
