The Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) has allocated $ 150 million to set up pesticide testing laboratories.
Given consumer right to healthy food, the ministry is also preparing to set up three laboratories for testing pesticides. The creation of testing laboratories will begin soon, said Minister of Agriculture Chakrapani Khanal.
“Since the government is obliged to supply healthy food to the population, we plan to create more pesticide testing laboratories in the border areas to check the pesticide residues in imported food products,” he said, adding: “The work to modernize existing testing laboratories and create new laboratories will take place at the same time. "
About three months ago, the government was criticized for abolishing strict border testing policies for pesticides and allowing unhealthy foods to enter the country.
The minister said that Indian merchants realized that unhealthy foods would not be allowed on the market and cleared their counters from them.
According to him, the government is preparing to create three laboratories for testing pesticides in the first stage. Although the creation of one laboratory costs 100 million rupees, the Ministry allocated 150 million rupees for the first stage of work.
There are currently seven pesticide treatment centers in six provinces.
