Ponds are one of the common and popular elements of landscape design. They can be exclusively decorative, with underwater inhabitants or have a functional purpose and be used for swimming. In the latter case, a convenient and safe descent in the form of steps to enter the reservoir is necessary.
Stair design
The most durable version of the descent into the water is a metal staircase with handrails. To make feet more pleasant to walk, steps can be made of wood. The upper part of the structure is located at ground level. The lower part is set into the soil.
Its installation is best done simultaneously with the construction of the reservoir, but it is also possible to do it already in the finished pond.
- The described design of the stairs has several advantages, among which:
- reliability;
- simplicity in manufacturing and installation;
- lack of need for special equipment;
- long service life;
- possibility of replacing wooden parts.
Did you know? The inhabitants of ancient Greece smashed and decorated parks and gardens as far back as the 10th – 8th centuries. BC e. They managed to create their own style of design of green zones, which is distinguished by its utilitarianism, the use of straight paths, decorating them with columns, vases, sculptures.
What materials and tools are needed
Since the staircase will constantly come into contact with moisture - the most unfavorable environment for any material, then it is worthwhile to select metal and wood, the service life of which is the longest under such conditions. The metal must be resistant to corrosion. It is desirable to paint it with special paint. Wood must be durable, resistant to moisture and decay. It must be treated with antiseptics.
For the manufacture of stairs, the following materials will be necessary:
- equally strong profile corner with a length and width of 25 × 25 cm, a thickness of 2.5 mm;
- fasteners;
- board 12 cm wide, 3.2 cm thick;
- saw;
- profile pipe.
For the steps, it is worth choosing wood from larch, oak, pine and other coniferous crops. They can last a long time.
Marking and drawings
To determine the design of the stairs, you must first draw its drawing. It must be indicated on it the sizes of all components.
The following dimensions will be optimal:
- staircase width - 60 cm;
- the width of the metal frame is 61 cm;
- height of flight between steps - 20 cm;
- width of wooden steps - 12 cm;
- the number of steps, depending on the size of the descent into the water;
- the angle of inclination of the stairs is 60–70 cm.

Frame manufacturing
The described frame is convenient to manufacture in that it does not require a welding machine and complex manipulations. It is available for a person who does not have special skills in construction.
Did you know? The fact that the tradition of decorating gardens originated a very long time is evidenced by various facts that have survived to this day. So, the emperor Claudius Caesar, who ruled in Rome in 41–54. n e., with pleasure do-it-yourself decorated the garden with numerous decorative compositions of roses.
To make a frame, it is necessary to cut off 2 profile corners. Their length should be such as the full height of the entire structure. Combine the lower edges of the segments at an angle of 90 ° with corners whose length is equal to the width of the stairs. Then attach profiles to them - the side bases of the structure.
Construction structure
After the frame is equipped, you can proceed to the attachment of steps and railings.
Complete the manufacture of the structure as follows:
- Make markings on the lateral bases of the staircase frame.
- Cut corners from metal and attach them to the marking on the base.
- Saw the board into steps of the required length.
- Attach stairs to the structure.
- Cut equal lengths from the profile pipe for the handrails.
- Attach them to the side bases.
- Connect them together in parallel.
If you make the structure in a similar way, then it can be easily removed and cleaned for wintering, and installed in the warm season again.
Important! To make the entrance to the pond more convenient, the uppermost step should be made wider using 2 pieces of board.
So, if the area allows, then in the country you can equip a swimming pond. To make it convenient and safe to enter, you should make a staircase with a railing. A good and durable option is a design with a metal frame and wooden steps.
