Palms are plants that do not require special care. Despite the fact that for a temperate climate, a palm tree is not a familiar plant, yet it is able to grow not only indoors, but also on open ground.
Criteria
There are many criteria by which you can divide all palm trees into different species.
For instance:
- in appearance, these plants are divided into bushy and single-stemmed;
- in the form of foliage - cirrus and fan;
- on demand for illumination - photophilous and shade-loving.
Also in our area, one can distinguish such a criterion as the ability to grow indoors and outdoors, since too heat-loving specimens cannot be grown on the street.
One date palm yields 250 kg of dates annually.
Palm trees that can be grown at home
At home, you can easily grow some types of palm trees:
1. Date fruit when growing a house, it is not demanding, it easily emerges from the bone, and is calm about dry air.
The only important condition for growth is bright lighting. It grows and grows very slowly.
2. Trachicarpus in the warm southern regions it also feels great on the street, transferring winter frosts to -15 ° С. Homes usually grow decorative undersized species. Shoots appear very slowly.
3. Chamerops in the summer, directly in the tank, you can take it out to the open air, if possible. Chamerops grows very slowly, preferring the sunny side, with a lack of light it slows down growth.
4. Liviston. The main conditions for its excellent growth at home is bright lighting and air humidity. The rest of the plant is undemanding, grows quickly, but do not forget about the regularity of watering.
Coconut palm can live up to 100 years, while giving about 450 nuts a year.
Shady palm trees
There is a group of plants that, when grown at home, does not tolerate direct sunlight.
These palm trees include:
- Hamedorea,
- Chrysalidocarpus.
For them, the necessary conditions are shading, constant hydration and spraying.
Photophilous palm trees
There are also palm trees that are unrealistic to grow at home, because they need careful care, constant bright light and fresh air.
These are the following types:
- Raveney Rucheynaya,
- Dipsis,
- Siagrus Romantsova.
Outdoor Palm Trees
Before you start growing palm trees in open ground, you still need to understand whether it is realistic to do this in a particular region, being guided by the criterion of winter hardiness of the plant.
In regions with warm climates, the following species grow outside the home:
1. Washingtonia refers to photophilous palm trees. It is optimal for her loose and well-drained soil. Washington can be propagated with freshly sown seed. Under suitable conditions, grows up to 20 m in height.
2. Saber Palmetto - photophilous and hygrophilous plant, it will feel best in coastal marine regions with a warm climate. At first it grows very slowly, then the growth rate accelerates.
3. Butia - a very thermophilic species, prefers sunny places. It is impossible to transplant into the open ground before 10 years of age. This is done together with a lump of earth in which it grew in a container, while the plant survives well after such a transplant. In the first years of life, growth is very fast, then the pace slows down.
4. Yubeya growing very slowly. Seeds for planting require scarification due to the very thick shell. Yubeya prefers bright places in the garden, does not like stagnation of moisture.
For an amateur gardener, nothing is impossible, so feel free to experiment and enjoy growing exotic trees that you love - palm trees!
