Norway spruce has several varieties. Among them is very noticeable - Spruce Spruce, due to the unusual color of needles. It is often used to decorate a summer cottage. The features of its cultivation and use in landscape compositions will be discussed later.
Appearance Features
According to the description, Picea Rydal is not very different from the classic spruce. Her crown is also conical, rather dense. But the tree grows slowly, adds about 6-8 cm per year and reaches a maximum height of 3-4 m.
The rate of color change of spruce depends on temperature - the colder, the later the needles will turn green.
At ten, her height is only a meter. The color of the needles is very unusual. Young needles, in spring, deep red. After a couple of days they become red-burgundy. Such beauty spruce pleases the eye not for long, about three weeks. Needle length 3 cm.
Landscape design application
Rydal recommend planting as a stand-alone tree. It can be used in simple landscape compositions with a minimum of related plants. Moreover, due to the fact that spruce trees love acidic soil and create shade, not every plant is able to share one plot with it. Only ferns, astilbe, sour, lily of the valley are adjacent to conifers.
Growing requirements
Spruce Rydal is very fond of sunny places, but he can also take penumbra well. Prefers acidic or slightly acidic soil. It tolerates poorly when waterlogged soil, although it requires regular wetting.
Did you know? Christmas tree needles sometimes actively secrete honey dew, which is actively collected by bees. For a day, the bee family collects about 4 kg of honeydew honey of a dark green color and a tarry aroma.
Diseases and Pests
Conifers are considered quite resistant plants, but still they are attacked by some diseases and pests:
- Aphid spruce - pulls out all the juices from the needles and covers it with a specific coating. Destroyed with a soap solution (treatment of affected areas).
- Spider mite - also eats juice, covering the needles with dots and the finest cobwebs. Effective anti-pest drugs are insecticides and tick preparations.
- Coniferous worm - lead to yellowing of the needles. In small quantities, it is destroyed by spraying tobacco infusion (three times with an interval of three weeks). Massive damage - treatment with insecticides.
- Rust (needles, cones) - a fungal infection, due to which the needles are covered with yellow bubbles, and the cones are dark. It leads to the death of branches and premature opening of cones, which is why seeds die.
- Schütte (present, snowy, brown) - a fungal disease, manifested by a change in the color of the needles to brown. Appears in early spring after snow melts or at the end of spring. Fungicides with a treatment interval of two weeks are applicable against the scourge.
- Fusarium - a viral disease affecting the root system. For preventive purposes, fungicides are treated with wood and soil. Fusarium is not recommended to be treated independently. It is difficult to identify the cause of its manifestation, so treatment can lead to the death of the entire landing. Need to seek help from specialists.
Unusual beauty spruce Rydal will be the decoration of your site in the spring. The rest of the year, it will purify the air and delight the eye with saturated greens.
