Within the framework of the Milk, Fruit and Vegetable Financing Scheme for Schoolchildren, the European Union agreed to continue financing the School Milk Program in the UK for the 2019/2020 academic year.
The EU Commission published its budget appropriations along with its annual report on the evaluation of the school curriculum for fruits, vegetables and milk. 105 million euros out of a total of 250 million euros were allocated for milk and other dairy products under this scheme, which is 5 million euros more for milk than under the 2017/18 scheme.
The report also states that in 2017/2018, about 159,000 schools participated in the Scheme, and 178 million liters of milk were distributed among children throughout the European Union. Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan said: “Thanks to the EU school curriculum, our young citizens can benefit from the nutritious, safe and high-quality food produced by our European farmers, as well as find out where it comes from. The Commission is proud to have contributed to this important educational path by fostering healthy habits from an early age. ” Dr. Hilary Jones, spokeswoman for the School & Nursery Milk Alliance, said: “Milk is a healthy and tasty snack for our growing children, and it has been proven that it helps solve important problems like caries in children.
It is good news that students throughout the UK will continue to receive milk as they learn to eat right and take care of themselves. It is imperative that the UK develop a replacement for this scheme after the country leaves the EU and this scheme. ”
