In dry times, high oleic sunflower has a yield of more than 30 kg / ha and is more profitable than other crops, says Yuri Pernak, chief agronomist of the Agromir farm.
The farm processes about 1460 hectares of land in the Kherson region. For several consecutive years, 1⁄4 of all lands has been allocated under high oleic sunflower, which is 320-400 ha, depending on weather conditions.
Since oleic acid is reduced in oil of high oleic sunflower oil during drought, farm workers add antistressants and adhesives to plant nutrition. Before sowing high oleic sunflower, agromir farmers properly prepare the soil: traditional plowing, spring harrowing and two cultivations are carried out.In practice, it is rather difficult to adhere to the recommended marginal margins both within the boundaries of the land and with adjacent areas. With this in mind, the crop rotation is being formed in the farm so that commodity sunflower does not grow nearby, this issue is previously decided with the neighbors. It is still too early to sow high oleic sunflower. Usually, it is sown in the first or second decade of May. Long-term practical experience shows that under such conditions the seeds germinate faster. The number of weeds in the fields is less, and the crop yield is higher. After sowing, fertilizing and soil herbicides should be applied, Yuri Pernak shared information.
