According to experts of the EastFruit project, the price of last year's carrots in Ukrainian markets is becoming lower.
Today, carrots from the harvest of 2018 can be bought at a price of 14-18 UAH / kg ($ 0.53-0.68 / kg), which is 11% cheaper than at the end of last week.
The tendency to reduce the cost of vegetables of the "old" crop is explained by a decrease in demand for the product, because many wholesale companies refuse to buy it because of its high cost. The decrease in prices was also caused by the entry into the market of large quantities of vegetables from the storages of those farmers who for a long time held the goods, expecting high prices for them. Thus, the supply of carrots from last year’s crop in the market increased significantly. The emergence of a new crop on the carrot market does not contribute to price increases.
It is noteworthy that even despite a steady decline in carrot prices over two weeks, they still far exceed the price level of 2018. Thus, in the last days of May last year, they asked for carrots in the market about 1.5 times less than today day.According to market players, farmers were forced to lower prices, since the quality of the root crop of the “old” crop is rapidly deteriorating, and demand remains moderate.
